Syphilis is a type of bacterial infection that according to the CDC^ is on the rise in America. Reported cases have increased every year since 2001. This infection is typically spread via sexual contact but can spread through any type of skin or mucous membrane contact so long as the initial syphilis sores are present. Syphilis can also be spread between a mother and child during pregnancy. Early identification of syphilis symptoms is vital, as the infection is far easier to eliminate during its early stages. Failure to identify these symptoms and seek proper medical attention can lead to life-threatening heart, brain, and organ issues.
1. Chancre Sores
When first contracted, syphilis is best characterized by a single symptom. This sore, called a chancre sore, is typically present on the site of the infection. This sore is typically singular but may be present in groups. A chancre sore is generally small, round and painless. In some cases, the sore may be open and/or wet. Though these sores are the tell-tale sign of a syphilis infection, they are often hard to spot. Not only do they often occur in difficult-to-spot areas, but they also have a tendency to be mistaken for in-grown hairs or other types of similar sores.
