A hysterectomy is the surgical removal of a woman’s uterus, which is where a baby grows when a woman becomes pregnant. In some cases, the cervix, ovaries, and fallopian tubes are also removed. According to the CDC, by the age of sixty, 1 in 10 women will have had a hysterectomy. Outside of pregnancy related surgeries, hysterectomy is the most common surgery for women in the United States.
1. Types of Surgery
Hysterectomies are performed in 1 of 3 different ways, depending on individual situation. In an abdominal-open incision surgery, the abdominal area is completely opened in order to remove the uterus. With laparoscopic surgery, the doctor will make small incisions. Lastly, in a vaginal hysterectomy, the removal is done via the vaginal canal.
