10 Things You Need to Know About Blood Clots

2. Where Do Blood Clots Come From?

As the name suggests, blood clots are gel-like masses formed when your blood pools. There are a few reasons why a blood clot might form: they can form as a result of an injury, or they can form in veins and vessels that might not have an injury. When they form in areas that don’t have an injury, it’s more likely because the flowing blood has come in contact with something in the blood vessel wall, creating a chain-reaction signal for blood platelets to clot up.  Blood clots can also occur if your blood doesn’t flow properly (waxy cholesterol build-up, or artery obstructions can cause this), and the blood pools and the platelets stick together.
