There is some concern about the diagnosis of blood clots among athletes, as some healthcare providers are missing or dismissing DVT and pulmonary embolisms. Typically, blood clots aren’t something people associate with athletes, and clots aren’t usually a concern. However, if you think about the symptoms of DVT like swelling, cramping, and pain when standing or walking, it’s understandable that a doctor might misdiagnose the pain. Even signs of pulmonary embolism, like shortness of breath, can be brushed off as tight chest muscles, pneumonia or asthma. If you think you might have symptoms of a blood clot, stick to your gut and advocate for yourself!
