10 Must Know Facts About the Birth Control Sponge

7. Does it hurt?

No. Inserting a sponge is similar to inserting a tampon. Once it’s in place, you should not be able to feel it. If you feel any discomfort, the sponge may not be completely against your cervix. Be sure to press the sponge against your cervix, with the dimpled side facing toward it, and the loop facing outward. You should be able to feel this loop, as you will use it to remove the sponge later on.
