Tests

If a woman has these symptoms or she suspects that her sexual partner has an STD, she should see her doctor as soon as practicable. The doctor will conduct:
1. A pelvic exam
2. An overall physical

They will also call up lab tests to culture any vaginal discharge. To culture bacteria is to allow it to multiply in a medium in a laboratory. This allows doctors to see what kind of bacteria it is. They may also order:

1. Blood tests
2. Urine tests
3. Cervical swabs
4. A pregnancy test
5. Other tests to rule out other disorders that may share the same symptoms as PID. These disorders include:

1. Endometriosis
2. Ectopic pregnancy
3. Appendicitis
4. Foreign body in the vagina

Rarely, the doctor will use a laparoscope to directly view the fallopian tubes. This is not the norm because the test is invasive, and there are other ways to diagnose PID.
