Treatment for Pelvic Inflammatory Disease

The doctor prescribes antibiotics and other drugs to treat PID. These antibiotics can be injected or taken orally.

Most women do not have to stay in the hospital to be treated, but it is important that they take their medication on a schedule. The entire course of the drug has to be taken even if the woman feels better after a few days. Other women are sick enough to have to be hospitalized, especially if the PID has resulted in a pelvic abscess. This is a pocket that contains pus and infected fluid. In women it’s usually found between the back of vagina and the uterus or the rectum. It is also found in the fallopian tubes and the ovaries. If a pelvic abscess isn’t treated, it could be life threatening.
