Actively practicing safe sex with consistent protection is the number one way to prevent congenital syphilis. Syphilis can be transmitted through any form of intercourse including vaginal, anal or oral. Congenital syphilis is treatable. In the event a woman suspects she may have syphilis, she should seek immediate medical treatment. A simple antibiotic treatment is all it takes to cure syphilis. It is well worth the effort in the event a woman is, or even suspects that she may be pregnant. Due to the severe consequences of congenital syphilis, all pregnant women should be tested regardless of whether symptoms are present. A baby born with congenital syphilis or exposed during birth, can be treated with antibiotics.
