What Causes Diverticulitis?
There are certain diverticulitis causes of which you should be aware. When diverticula occur, it is typically in a weak area in the colon where there is pressure. When they develop and there is pressure in the colon, there may be pouches around the size of a marble that begin protruding through the wall of the colon. However, the main cause of diverticulitis is when there is an infection or inflammation, or both, following a tear of the diverticula.
- Age: Your risk for diverticulitis increases as you age. It usually begins to develop after you reach 40.
- Obesity: Individuals who are obese have more of a chance of developing diverticulitis.
- Smoking: If you smoke, you also have more of a risk for the condition.
- Lack of exercise: Lack of exercise can lead to diverticulitis, but you can lower your risk by taking up a strenuous exercise routine. Speak with your doctor to ensure that this is OK.
- Diet high in animal fat and low in fiber: A diet high in animal fat but low in fiber can increase your risk for diverticulitis.
- Certain medications: Some drugs can increase your risk for diverticulitis, such as opioids, steroids, and NSAIDs like ibuprofen.
