Living With Diverticulitis

2. Dietary Restrictions

To ease the pain and other symptoms of diverticulitis, doctors recommend avoiding certain foods. For the first few days of treatment you should follow a liquid diet. Foods high in fiber irritate the condition. This means staying away from beans, legumes, vegetables, and whole grains. Foods high in sugar and fat can cause inflammation. Food containing high levels of FODMAP should be eliminated from your diet. FODMAP stands for fermentable oligosaccharides, disaccharides, monosaccharides, and polyols. Examples of foods high in FODMAPs include dairy products, cabbage, fermented foods, onions, garlic, and leafy greens.
