7. Surgery
Surgery is generally only performed in cases where complications arise. Complications include fistulas, bowel obstructions, or bowel abscesses. People who have experienced diverticulitis multiple times will often require surgery. There are two common types of diverticulitis surgery: primary bowel resection or bowel resection with colostomy. A primary bowel resection involves removing damaged areas of the intestines and joining together healthy segments. This procedure often involves laparoscopy. In situations where the inflammation is too severe a bowel resection with colostomy might is performed. A colostomy is a procedure that reroutes waste into a bag outside the body. The operation can be reversed once the swelling goes down.
