Unfortunately, there isn’t just one risk factor that affects your body. There are several different risk factors that lead to the development of osteoporosis. Firstly, age, sex, race, family history, and body size, can all affect your chances of getting osteoporosis. Less obvious risk factors include lower hormone levels in men and women, thyroid problems, and problems with your adrenal glands. If you have any other medical conditions, like lupus, cancer, or rheumatoid arthritis, your risk increases. Further, your lifestyle can greatly affect your risk of developing osteoporosis. Lastly, consumption of alcohol or tobacco can increase your risk.
