6. Is Osteoporosis Hereditary?
The short answer to this question is yes. If one or both of your parents have osteoporosis, your risk of developing the disease will be much higher. This is more likely if one or both parents have also fractured a hip. That’s not to say that just because your parents have osteoporosis you will certainly develop the disease. However, your risk factor will be higher and you will have to screened for the disease earlier. Women with a family history should start regular screenings for osteoporosis after turning 50.
