3. Diagnosis

Typically, doctors diagnose sciatica through x-rays, MRIs and CT scans of the spine. X-rays don’t give a full picture of your sciatic nerve, so MRIs are the better option because the magnetic imaging creates a better picture of your spine.  Even if the imaging doesn’t show the sciatic nerve, the imaging can show what’s happening to your spine to cause the sciatic pain. Your doctor will likely want your full medical history to help determine if you’ve had any injuries. Prior to performing any imaging, your doctor will also probably do a full physical examination.
