Using antiviral medication can help to reduce the severity, frequency and duration of anal herpes outbreaks. With continued use of antiviral medication, outbreaks with lesions around the anus usually decrease or stop. Once the first outbreak ends, the virus moves to the nerve cells and may lay dormant for long periods of time. The doctor may then decide to stop using suppressive therapy. However, excessive sun exposure, illness, stress and other external factors can trigger a recurrence. The person will once again have to begin using antiviral medications until the outbreak subsides.
