4. Are Cold Sores Herpes?
Yes. HSV type 1, oral herpes is also called cold sores or fever blisters. They usually appear as small, red, raised bumps or sores on the lips, tongue, gum, roof of the mouth or inside the cheeks or throat. The virus passes from one person to another through infected saliva or genital contact with the mouth. According to the American Sexual Association, more than 50 percent of the American population has oral herpes. Cold sores may not always develop even though the virus is present and can still be transmitted.
