Common Herpes Questions – Answered

5. Are Canker Sores Herpes?

No. Canker sores are painful whitish ulcers that appear on soft tissue in the mouth, e.g., inside the cheeks, on the gum near the teeth, or roof of the mouth. Because they also appear in the mouth, many people easily mistake canker sores for cold sores or oral herpes. The difference is canker sores is not caused by a virus. It occurs due to vitamin deficiency or a weakened immune system and cannot pass from one person to another.
