8. How Long Does an Outbreak Last?
Some people do not experience herpes outbreaks if the virus remains dormant after the initial infection. Others get recurrent outbreaks. It all depends on how the virus affects your body. People with a compromised immune system or other medical conditions such as HIV/AIDS or leukemia may see more outbreaks than those with a healthy immune system. The first outbreak produces the worst symptoms within 2-20 days of getting the virus and can last about 2-14 weeks. You may notice itching or tingling when a new outbreak is about to occur. These outbreaks tend to be less painful and go away faster as time goes by.
