5. Treatment
First, your physician will inspect your sores to determine whether or not you have herpes. A sample of fluid from your sores is sent for private STD testing. If the tests come back positive, your physician may prescribe an antiviral drug for you that will speed the rate at which your sores and lesions heal. These medications also relieve the pain of herpes. You will be prescribed a pill if your lesions are located in the cervix or the vagina, but the doctor will prescribe an ointment for external sores. Tolerance can build for these medications so your physician may need to increase your doses to maintain the drugs effectiveness.
